How Ontario auto insurance is priced
Insurers price the likelihood and potential cost of a claim. Your driver profile, years of experience, convictions and at-fault claims matter, as do your vehicle, how far you drive, where it is principally kept, the coverage selected and your deductible.
Each insurer uses its own approved rating approach, so the same profile can produce meaningfully different prices. That is why this calculator returns a band rather than a single figure.
The estimate starts from a neutral Ontario planning baseline, then applies directional factors for the answers above. The figures are not an Ontario average and are not based on a quote engine.

How convictions affect premiums
Insurers look at the conviction itself—not simply the number of demerit points. The seriousness, recency and number of convictions can affect eligibility, discounts and price. At-fault accidents are assessed separately and can also raise premiums.
This estimator uses broad categories only. A real application will ask for the exact offence or accident details and relevant dates.
Practical ways to lower premiums
- Compare several insurers. Pricing models and discounts vary.
- Ask about a higher deductible. It may lower the premium, but increases what you pay on a claim.
- Reduce annual driving where practical. Lower usage can reduce exposure.
- Review collision coverage on an older vehicle. Compare the premium and deductible with the vehicle’s value.
- Ask about discounts. Winter tires, multiple policies, multiple vehicles, driver training or telematics may qualify depending on the insurer.
Ontario car insurance FAQ
Is this estimate an actual insurance quote?
No. It is a rough educational planning range. Only a licensed insurer, agent or broker can provide an actual quote after collecting the full information required.
Why is the range so wide?
Insurers use different approved rating models and territories. Exact vehicle details, claim dates, deductibles, discounts, listed drivers and policy options can materially change a quote.
Does a minor ticket always increase my premium?
Not always. The effect depends on the conviction, your full record, timing, insurer rules and whether a conviction-free discount is lost.
Is collision coverage mandatory in Ontario?
Collision coverage for damage to your own vehicle is optional, though a lender or lessor may require it under your financing or lease agreement.
What information should I gather before requesting quotes?
Have driver licence details, years licensed, claims and convictions, vehicle year/make/model/VIN, annual kilometres, use of the vehicle, postal code, desired coverage and deductibles ready.
