Practical driver guides
From offer screen to tax folder
These guides target the decisions new Canadian delivery drivers search for most: pay, expenses, timing, signup and recordkeeping.
How Uber Eats driver pay works in Canada
Uber says drivers see how much an order pays before accepting it, including pickup and drop-off information plus estimated time and distance; customers can add tips, and drivers keep 100% of tips. Weekly transfers are available, while faster payout options can have terms or fees. The offer is gross revenue, not profit.
1. Offer valueStart with the displayed fare plus any promotion and tip.
2. True timeCount driving to pickup, restaurant waits, drop-off and unpaid repositioning.
3. True distanceCount kilometres from your current location through the next useful area.
A useful accept/decline test: estimate total minutes and kilometres, then compare the projected net—not just the displayed dollars—to your minimum hourly and per-kilometre targets. Recalculate after a week with actual data.
Uber Eats expenses and taxes in Canada
CRA guidance says Canadian gig workers must report self-employment income and may claim eligible business expenses when supported by records. For motor vehicles, potentially deductible costs can include fuel, insurance, licence and registration, maintenance, interest and other eligible amounts, allocated to business use where required.
- Track income: platform statements, promotions and tips.
- Track kilometres: total annual kilometres and business kilometres, with dates and purpose.
- Keep receipts: fuel or charging, repairs, tires, insurance, phone and supplies.
- Separate concepts: the calculator’s reserve is cash planning, not a tax calculation or deduction claim.
GST/HST treatment can depend on the exact activity and threshold. Food delivery and passenger ridesharing are not automatically the same tax situation. Use CRA guidance or a qualified tax professional for your facts.
Best hours and zones for food delivery
There is no universal “best zone.” A strong zone combines order density, short restaurant waits, easy parking, efficient drop-offs and a useful next pickup nearby.
- Test meal windows: compare weekday lunch, dinner and weekend blocks separately.
- Measure deadhead: long unpaid drives back to restaurants can erase a strong-looking offer.
- Watch bottlenecks: drive-thrus, malls, condo elevators and scarce parking add minutes.
- Build a zone log: record gross, online hours, kilometres and orders for each zone and time block.
After 3–5 comparable shifts, enter each block into this calculator. Keep the blocks with the strongest repeatable net hourly rate—not the single best night.
Uber Eats driver signup process in Canada
Uber’s Canadian delivery page lists requirements that vary by transportation method and location. In general, new couriers sign up, provide required documents and a photo, consent to screening and wait until activated before receiving delivery requests. For car delivery, Uber lists a driver’s licence, proof of insurance, work eligibility and background screening among the requirements; age and vehicle rules vary by location.
Prepare documentsWork eligibility, valid ID or licence, insurance and any city-specific items.
Confirm coverageAsk your insurer, in writing if possible, how delivery use affects the policy.
Set a floorKnow your minimum acceptable net hourly and per-kilometre result before going online.
Use the signup matcher to open the current official Canadian routes. Platform approval and availability are not guaranteed.
How to calculate cost per delivery
Multiply total delivery kilometres by your combined energy, maintenance and wear cost per kilometre. Add the order’s share of monthly overhead, then subtract that total from fare, promotions and tip.
Example formula:
profit per order = offer + tip − vehicle cost − overhead share
Use round-trip or repositioning distance when the destination leaves you far from the next likely pickup.
Weekly driver review checklist
- Export or record gross earnings and tips.
- Log online hours, not just active time.
- Record business kilometres and receipts.
- Compare gross/hour, kilometres/order and net/hour.
- Move the chosen reserve into a separate account.
- Drop low-margin zones, merchants or time blocks.
A repeatable review is more valuable than guessing from one unusually good or bad shift.
